Beautiful. There are too many brilliant Smiths songs and not enough words to praise them with. I grew up in working class Birmingham and The Smiths were always on in our house...and played loud!

'How Soon is Now' spoke to that adolescent whose shyness held me back. "I am the son and heir/of a shyness that is criminally vulgar."

'Heaven knows I'm Miserable Now' was an anthem for the dreamers who feared the mundane nature of working class life. "I was looking for a job and then I found a job, and heaven knows I'm miserable now".

'Cemetry Gates' explaining the difference between the two types of people in the world: "Keates and Yates are on your side/But I've got Wilde on mine".

A couple of years ago I was asked to play bass on some Smiths songs (I'm used to guitar parts), and it took me aback how elaborate, energetic and musical Andy Rourke's basslines were. A huge loss for British music, but a reminder of a time when the working class north had music that truly represented them.
